    Default Himalayan mouse hare

Himalayan mouse hare is found in Valley of flowers in Uttarakhand. This animal lives on the few blades of grass that grow in higher regions. The grass is considered to be very nutritious and difficult to digest. The rabbits thus pass out the half digested food and quickly eats it's own droppings so as to subject them to another cycle of digestion. This recycling of food is characteristic of some other members of the wild as well and is known as pseudo rumination. The hare is a very unsuspecting creature. On the approach of the human beings, he stands and stares rather than flee. Quite a few of them find their way to the pot of the graziers.

    Default Snow leopards

Snow leopards are found at high altitude Himalayas and a haunter of the wild silences. Its call is shriller than the panther's and resembles the sound of sawing wood made by the latter. In stealthy stalking, skill and speed, grace and agility, the beast is unmatched. He has the longest tail among the feline species.

Mating takes place in Feb - March and the litter is born in May - June after a gestation period of approximately fourteen to sixteen weeks. The litter consists of four to five cubs but according to local belief the mother feels so hungry that some of the cubs are devoured by her at birth. The cubs are as helpless as human babies at birth. They become fully adult in two or three years and live for about fifteen years.

From all accounts it appears that the mother alone tends the younger ones. she has to move large distances to collect food. Cubs get neglected and even lost at times.

I came to know more than one instance when cubs were picked up by graziers and trekkers. Their chances of survival are meagre and it is here that the main danger to the snow leopard lies. Food gets scarcer every day and living conditions impossible to cope with.

    Default China, India and Pakistan

Asia's superpowers - China, India and Pakistan.

India has 15600 km border to defend of which 4050 km is with China. India is one of the world's largest importers of arms. India has the fourth largest armed forces in the world. Future wars will be short wars of great intensity.

The accession of Kashmir to India at the time of the partition of the subcontinent has never been accepted by Pakistan. Since then they feel that the Hindu ruler of Kashmir (Raja Hari Singh) was coerced into joining the Union of India without ascertaining the wishes of the predominantly Muslim people.

Pakistan's effort to annex Kashmir by force, initially in 1947 - 48 (Op Gulmarg) and yet again in 1965 (Op Gibralter), was twarted by the Indian Army. Kashmir today stands divided along a loosely supervised Line Of Control (LoC) by the UN.

An uneasy peace prevails, frequently interrupted by military violation of the LoC.

Tibet was annexed to China in 1950. Dalai Lama flight to India in March 1959. Macleodganj in Dharmshala is the Head quarters of Dalai Lama.
