National Song : The song Vande Mataram, composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterji, was a source of inspiration to the people in their struggle for freedom. It has an equal status with National Anthem. The first political occasion when it was sung was the 1896 session of the Indian National Congress.
National bird : The Indian peacock, the national bird, is a colourful swan-sized bird, with a fan shaped crest of feathers, a white patch under the eyes and a long, slender neck. It is fully protected under the Indian Wildlife protection Act 1972. Peacocks perform spectacular dance when rain clouds appear.
National Animal : The magnificent tiger has a thick yellow coat of fur with dark stripes. The combination of grace, strength, agility and enormous power has earned the tiger its pride of place as the national animal of India. Tigers are endangered species and numbering only 3500 in India.
National flower : Lotus
National calendar : Saka era with Chaitra as its first month.
