Mt Everest (Sagarmatha, Nepali name; Chomolungma, Tibetan name) is the world's highest mountain at 8848 m located in Nepal - China border. In 1841, Sir George Everest, Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843, records the location of Everest.By the end of the 2008 climbing season, there had been 4,102 ascents to the summit by about 2,700 individuals. The climbing fee levied by Government of Nepal is US $ 25,000 per person. For the first time, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay summited Mt Everest at 11:30 a.m. local time on 29 May 1953 via the South Col Route.
Climbers normally fly from Kathmandu, Capital of Nepal, to Lukla (2,860 m) and trek to Base camp at 5,380 m via Namche Bazar in 6 days. Yaks and sherpa porters carry the load to BC. Khumbu glacier is the most dangerous section in the climbing route.
Above the icefall is Camp I at 6,065 m. Camp II at 6,500 m is at the base of Lhotse face. The route up is via North Col (7000 m) to Camp III at 7,470 m.
The route further up is via the Geneva Spur and The Yellow Band to Camp IV at 7,920 m (South Col). The route goes via South Summit and Hillary's step at 8,760 m. Most of the summiters spend half an hour on top of the world because of the peculiar weather condition. Climbers descend to Camp IV before darkness.

The fastest oxygen-supported ascent over the southeast ridge was Nepalese Pemba Dorjie Sherpa's 2004 climb, using 8 h 10 min for the 17 km route.
Tenzing Norgay was a Nepali citizen, later honorary Indian citizenship was conferred. He stayed at Darjeeling for a long time.
Brig. G. Singh was the first Indian citizen to climb.
Bachendri Pal was the first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest.
C. Balakrishnan is the first keralite to climb Mt. Everest.
For the 21st time, Apa Sherpa of Nepal summited Mt Everest on xx May 2011. Apa first reached the summit of Mount Everest on his fourth attempt, on May 10, 1990, with a New Zealand team.
Snow bound Rohtang pass is 50 km from Manali on the Leh highway.
Baralacha la is a high altitude pass on the Manali-Leh road in India. The route is motorable only for 3 to 4 months. There is a direct bus from Delhi to Leh via Chandigarh, Manali, Keylong and Pang camp.
