the volcanic area known as The Valley of 10,000 Smokes, which was
forever changed by the eruption of the Novarupta Volcano in 1912. The
eruption left a forty square mile ash deposit that is up to 700 feet deep in
some areas. Today, the area is better known for its large population of
Brown Bears. The latest survey estimates there are 2000 bears in Katmai
National Park. During July and September, brown bears often gather at

grounds. Visitors from all over the world come to the Falls in hopes of
viewing the bears in a classic Alaskan scene. The area has much to offer.
Along with bear viewing and volcano tours, sport fishing for Salmon and

Ratangad – A Fort Hidden In The Sahyadri Greens

Ratangad is a perfect destination for those who like adventure travel. This is a fort about more than 400 years old, located in Ratan Wadi, Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra, India. This fort lies in the Ajoba mountain range which is surrounded by mountains of Alang, Kalsubai,Kulang, Katarabai etc. Ratangad fort is around 4500 ft above sea level and and has a natural rock with cavity, which is known as ‘eye of the needle’,in the peak of the fort. It is simply amazing to watch the entire region from the peak. The fort as its name indicates, is really a jewel among all hill forts in sahyadri. The fort is located on the banks of Bhandardara lake in Ahmednagar. The journey through the fresh water lake with the great hills on the sides is actually a visual treat. It will take around 3 hours to reach the top from the base. The climb to the fort is not so steep, and merely before the final climb there are two steel ladders and some rock steps before reaching the door of the fort. There is a chance of losing the way at this point and better to hire local guides to show the route. From here route right leads to the fort where the route left leads to Rani Mahal. The rock steps are slippery and dangerous and should take care in this point. This oldest contrived catchment area with its beautiful locale of Bhandardara is really amazing. An ancient temple about 1000 years old is located at the base of this fort. This well preserved temple of Lord Shiva at Amurteshwar is really an apotheosis of architectural skill of ancient civilisation.

Getting There
By Air : Nearest airport Mumbai or Pune.
By Rail : Igatpuri is the nearest railway station. This is about 50 km from Ratangad.
By road : This fort is located on the Munbai-Nasik highway about 130 km from Mumbai, overlooking the picturesque locale of Bhandardara, one of the oldest artificial catchment area

Cape Stolbchaty: Volcanic Activity at its Finest

Kunashir Island is the southernmost island of the Kuril Islands, which are controlled by Russia and claimed by Japan. It lies between the straits of Kunashir, Catherine, Izmena, and South Kuril. Kunashir is visible from the nearby Japanese island of Hokkaidō from which it is separated by the Nemuro Strait.

It seems almost impossible to believe that nature itself created the “stone organs” of Cape Stolbchaty, on Kunashir Island. But this indeed the result of volcanic activity at its finest. This natural wonder is formed out of thousands of rock columns that sometimes, under the pressure of the elements come tumbling down, breaking to pieces and forming piles that resemble firewood. If you find the volcanic formations of Cape Stolbchaty interesting, you might want to check out The Giant’s Causeway and Garni Gorge.

A Tourist place: Bali

One of Bali's most important sea temples, Pura Tanah Lot ("Temple of Land in the Middle of the Sea") is a spectacular sight, especially at sunset.

The tiny island was formed by the gradual erosion of the ocean tide over thousands of years. The temple of Tanah Lot is said to have been founded by the 16th-century priest Nirartha, one of the last priests to come to Bali from Java.

The temple of Tanah Lot stands on a rocky island just off the southwest coast of Bali. One of Bali's most sacred sea temples, Tanah Lot is dedicated to the guardian spirits of the sea. The temple itself is said to be guarded from evil by the sea snakes that inhabit the caves below.

The temple itself is not accessible to visitors, but magnificent views can be had from a variety of points nearby. Crowds especially gather on the terraces nearby to watch the glow of the sunset behind the temple. Naturally, there are plenty of souvenir shops and cafes with a view to keep you well-supplied while doing so.

Amazing cave painting in Lascaux

Visitors stare, amazed by the cave art in Lascaux, south west France.
The expressive lines and bold colours are dramatic and exciting, conveying the energetic animals roaming alongside the artist responsible for these paintings thousands of years ago.
However, the pictures you see are actually replicas of real artwork produced in prehistoric times residing in the cave next door.

The originals - thought to be some of the oldest paintings in the world - had to be locked away in the Lascaux Cave in 1963 to preserve them from deteriorating as a result of visitors' humidity and warmth.
It had in the region of 100,000 visitors each year and the combination of so many people and strong lighting started to have a detrimental effect on the 17,000-year-old exhibition.

However, managers of the tourist site did not want to deprive future visitors from seeing these prehistoric works.
And so, they created Lascaux II - an exact replica of the cave and art - painted by local artist Monique Peytal.
Located on the same hill as the original, this large-scale copy took 10 years to complete and now receives approximately 300,000 art lovers every year.

It many not be the original but that doesn't make these chambers any less stunning.
