Actor HrithikRoshan underwent a successful brain surgery on Sunday to remove a clot that developed from "head injuries" suffered during filming.

The Bollywood star was having headaches for the past two months, his family said. But not until a CT scan and an MRI were performed on Friday was it revealed that he was suffering from subacute subdural haematoma, a brain condition normally seen in those above 65. Late on Saturday, the 39-year-old was rushed to Hinduja Healthcare in Khar after he also began experiencing weakness in his right hand.

In subdural haematoma, blood clots form between the surface of the brain and its tough covering called dura mater. At least in the young, it is most often the result of head injuries. And that is how it developed in Hrithik too, doctors believe. "He has been shooting many action sequences. Around two months ago, he leaped from a height of 30 feet and sustained an injury while falling into a water body," said Hrithik's doctor, consultant neurosurgeon Dr B K Mishra.

The actor started experiencing headaches soon after the accident. Till a month ago though, a CT scan did not show a clot.

At 2pm on Sunday, Hrithik was taken for surgery. The minor procedure involved drilling a small hole in the skull and sucking the clot out. It lasted an hour and a half, throughout which his family members were present at the Khar hospital. After the operation, he was shifted to the ward. The hospital said the actor's headache is now better and hand function normal. Dr Mishra observed that he will be discharged in three days, but will need at least a month's rest.

Hrithik's wife Sussanne said in a statement, "Thank you for all your love and concern. Hrithik has come out of the surgery stronger than ever before."

Dr Mishra said the actor was lucky that the clot was diagnosed just when it had started increasing. Brain clots have a tendency to draw fluids from the adjoining areas. "Usually, it starts with water and then begins draining blood," he explained. Jaslok Hospital's director of neurosurgery Dr Paresh Doshi added that it was surprising the condition hit the young star: "It can be serious for the young if not treated on time."

The actor's father Rakesh Roshan said: "He hit his head during the shooting of 'Bang Bang' two months back in Phuket."

Before going for surgery, Hrithik had tweeted, "Minor brain surgery to remove blood clot" Should be rock n rolling by evening! U guys have a great day too! Supersonic!!"
