Nikko:japan
A solemn pilgrimage site for many Japanese, the shrine complex at Nikko is, also, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area is closely associated with the history of the Tokugawa Shoguns. The surrounding National Park is stunning.
Nikko has pleasant shrines (Shinto) and temples (Buddhist) and enough noteworthy ones to fill several days of touring. The Rinnoji Temple area on Mount Nikko (top left) features over a dozen attractive and interesting temples. The Sacred Bridge (top right) crosses the Daiya River and marks the entrance to the Toshugu Shrine area. The three monkeys display ("Hear, Speak and See No Evil") is just one of many highly colorful carvings in the Toshugu Shrine. The God of the Wind (right bottom) is in the Daiyuin-byo section of the Toshugu Shrine
