Double hundreds by VVS Laxman and Gautam Gambhir took India to 613

VVS Laxman continued to torment Australia with his highest Test score in nearly five years as India built a huge total in Delhi. Australia picked up three wickets in the post-lunch session, a result that usually would please them, but a mammoth 278-run stand that had already been compiled by Laxman and Gautam Gambhir meant the damage was well and truly done.
Gambhir reached his first Test double-century before finally succumbing to tiredness on 206, but Laxman had no intention of following him to the pavilion and posted his best score since making 178 against Australia in Sydney in 2003-04. In the process, Laxman became the second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar to register 2000 Test runs against Australia and more importantly he kept pushing the game further out of the reach of Ricky Ponting's men.
