Kovalam is the most famous beach located 14 km from Thiruvananthapuram. Kovalam means a grove of coconut trees. It is a group of three beaches - Lighthouse (35 m high Vizhinjam Lighthouse on Kurumkal hillock, can be visited from 3 to 5 pm), Hawah (Eve's Beach) and Samudra - separated by rocky outcroppings. Hawah Beach is one of the beaches in India where top-less sunbathing is tolerated and well appreciated by the locals and many tourists in Kovalam are between the ages of 40 and 60 years young. Shallow waters stretching for hundreds of metres of the crescent shaped beach are ideal for swimming.
Tourist season : Oct to Mar. KSRTC operates bus to Kovalam from East Fort depot (30 min, Rs 13, 14 km). Follow the instructions of lifeguards while swimming as swimming can be dangerous in some areas.
Leela Kempinski and Taj Green Cove Resort are the main Luxury hotels in Kovalam. A large number of beach resorts and Ayurvedic massage parlors are located near the beach. Most of the foreigner's stay on Lighthouse Beach.
