University Grants Commission (UGC) has invited applications for the award of Post-Graduate Merit Scholarship for University Rank Holders for the academic session 2012-14. The Scholarship has been instituted with the objective of attracting talents for pursuing Post-graduate studies and supporting University Rank Holders who have secured 1st and 2nd positions at Undergraduate level in any recognized University / Autonomous College / Non-University affiliated Institute for Post-Graduation education, through scholarships to such students.
The scheme is for non-professional courses only. The awardees under this scheme can pursue their Post-Graduate programme in any area of specialization notified and also in any institution of higher learning in the country recognized by UGC under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC Act.
Applicant should be either the First or the Second Rank holders at Under-Graduate level in the streams mentioned below and admitted in any non-professional Post-Graduate course. Streams identified at undergraduate level for the award of scholarships are (i) Life Sciences (ii) Physical Sciences (iii) Chemical Sciences (iv) Earth Sciences (v) Mathematical Sciences (vi) Social Sciences (vii) Commerce and (viii) Languages. This scholarship is exclusively for these courses only. Professional Courses do not come under this scheme.
These awardees will have to submit the proofs of their merit position at undergraduate level in University/Institute/Autonomous College as well as their admission in first year of Post-Graduate course during academic year 2012-13. The scholarship would however, be subject to securing a minimum of sixty percent marks at Undergraduate level. The rank holders would be considered only from affiliated Universities wherein at least 100 students and in Deemed /Private Universities / Autonomous / Nonaffiliated colleges, from where, at least 25 students have appeared in the examination at Undergraduate level in the aforesaid programmes.
Duration of Scholarship is 2 years and the number of scholarships is 3000. The Rate of Scholarships is Rs. 2000/- p.m. (10 months in a year) for a total of 20 months (two academic years).
Selection will be made by an Expert Committee on the basis of applications which are complete in all respects, received through online mode within the stipulated time frame. The selection will be purely on merit basis. Applications can be submitted online from 3rd September 2012 onwards up to 3rd October, 2012.

An eligible candidate who is awarded the Post-Graduate Scholarship will not be debarred from accepting any other Scholarship. Students desirous of leaving the studies mid-way without completing the PG Degree will have to take prior approval from the UGC by submitting an application through the concerned University/College/Institution, along with justification. The awardee will have to submit the mark-sheet of PG-I & PG-II year on completion of the PG Course and Certificate, for availing the scholarship.
Applicants will have to submit proof of admission to Master’s degree course in a recognized Indian University/College/Institution, Matriculation Certificate clearly indicating the age of the Candidate, Prescribed Joining Report from the institution where the candidate has taken admission for P.G. Course (Annexure-I) and Prescribed Provisional Rank Certificate at U.G. level (Annexure-II).
Every year, University/Institution will submit a compiled statement (i) giving the names of the students selected for the scholarship along with their receipt of scholarship amount (ii) Progress Report to be submitted after the first year of the award giving percentage of marks obtained by the candidates (iii) Utilization certificate.
Applications submitted in hard copy shall not be entertained or considered for award of scholarship in any circumstances whatsoever. Record of candidates, who are not selected, shall not be preserved beyond three months from the date of declaration of results, on UGC website.
