Massage cream on the hands and nails daily, especially after using detergents and soaps. Put cream on each nail and massage the nail and the skin surrounding it, using circular strokes with your thumb. Daily massage is even more important during the dry season, to prevent brittleness and to restore the health of your nails.

Drinking the recommended allowance of eight to ten glasses of water each day will help keep nails from drying out and peeling. Gelatine dietary supplements, available in a drinkable form, can also help build nail strength from the inside out by thickening weak nails.

Trim your toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails. This is particularly important if you have diabetes.

Limit your use of polish removers: These products contain alcohol and other solvents that dry nails out, making them more prone to breakage and splitting.

Wear 100 percent cotton socks. They’re best for absorbing dampness, thus preventing fungal infections.

Avoid peeling the nail polish or removing it with your mouse because it weakens the nails, and removes the protection layer. Use a special product to remove nail polish and then wash your nails and put some cream on your hands and nails.

Eat Your Vitamins: We aren’t a big fan of getting your vitamins in pill form…that’s what food is for. There are a number of vitamins & minerals that are essential to healthy nails and we’ve gone so far as to create lists of recipes for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans that include a large % of them.

Avoid using very hot water to soak your hands, as this can cause dryness of the skin and nails.

Using a daily moisturizer specifically designed for hands and nails will help keep nails properly moisturized. Cuticles should also be well-cared for – keep them moisturized with a cuticle oil and in good shape. Don’t pick at nails, cuticles or the skin around them.

Add a glass of milk and a hard-boiled egg to your daily diet. Rich in zinc, they’ll do wonders for your nails, especially if your nails are spotted with white, a sign of low zinc intake.
