    Detail:

The weather is hot, the sun is shining, but the hottest place on Earth is, for a month, Germany. The 2006 FIFA World Cup is the most important event presented by the media this month. Of course that when talking about media, you can't forget that Internet is a media channel watched by a huge number of people.

When talking about Internet and media, a very important issue is the speed of the information and how easily it can be retrieved. The results of the matches played in Germany these days are no exception to that, and that's why a lot of programs were designed to help you get the results on your computer's monitor in real time. Maybe the most notorious of these applications is Microsoft Soccer Scoreboard, but we already talked about it.

Today's last review concerns another free program that was built to manage the FIFA World Cup Germany 2006. Its name is Germany 2006 and was developed by an Italian programmer. For a one man job, the result is awesome, so let's check it out!

The installation procedure is as easy as possible. First, get the 1.5MB archive from the Internet, then unpack the folder that's inside it wherever you want on your hard drive and run
    the executable file.

The interface is simple, with two menus on the menu bar and four tabs. We'll check them just a bit later, first we have to solve a little problem.

In order to display your local time when the matches are played, you can enter the time difference manually or select your Timezone and then click “Compute” (of course you will need an active Internet connection for this to work). Now, back to the matches and the results...

The results can only be updated manually from the Internet, and you can set the program to use a proxy server, if you need it. Results can be saved as TXT or HTML files, and are displayed as it follows...

First tab displays the results from the Groups stage. You have eight buttons available to help you select the group you want to watch.

The Table tab displays the tree of the matches that will be played starting on the 24th of June. There is also a Final Rank area here reserved for the first three places, but that will be filled on the 9th of July.

Next tab shows the Statistics for each team and contains the points won so far, the number of matches, wins, draws, losses and goals.

At last, in the Schedule tab you can watch the results of the matches played by each team, the matches played in a group, stage, or all of them.

This is the virtual Germany 2006. It may be a bit late, but it's still useful. I tried it, liked it and now I recommend it to you. I am sure you can find five minutes to give this program a shot too. Enjoy it!

    The Good

First of all, Germany 2006 is a free program that does what it should. It is easy to use for every computer user out there and can export match statistics.

    The Bad

This program can't display RSS Feeds or player and match statistics, but only the final results.

    The Truth

If you don't like Microsoft's approach to the World Cup results problem or if you own an older Windows version and can't use it, then this is the program for you!
