Applications have been invited for the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) to be held on February 17 for admission to Ph.D. and integrated Ph.D. programmes in Physics or Theoretical Computer Science in various institutions of repute.

The test centres include Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Madurai, Chennai, Goa, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, Delhi, Pune and Kolkata.

Apply online on Joint Entrance Screening Test till December 10. Applicants should create an account using an e-mail ID, login to the created account, complete the application form and submit it to generate a unique registration number. An application fee of Rs. 100 (Rs. 50 for those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes) has to be paid online.

IISER, Thiruvananthapuram, offers research facilities in experimental condensed matter, such as magnetic and superconducting materials, nanoscience and energy materials, photonics, soft condensed matter, conductor physics and devices, surface sciences and nano scale plamonics, ultrafast spectroscopy and theory in cosmology, classical and quantum gravity, gravitational wave physics, quantum information theory and statistical physics.

Army course

The Army has invited applications from unmarried men who have passed Plus Two with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with minimum aggregate 70 per cent marks for a technical entry scheme course starting in July. The course leads to the grant of permanent commission after four years of basic military and technical training. Applicants should be in the age group of 16 and a half to 19 and a half as on July 1, 2013. Eighty-five candidates will be selected for the training.

The basic military training will include a year’s technical training. After four years of engineering study, an engineering degree will be awarded. The Army meets the cost of training. Cadets are provided free accommodation and food. On successful completion of the course, the cadets will be granted permanent commission in the Army in the rank of sub-lieutenant in the pay scale of Rs. 15,600-39,100. During training, the candidates will be given a stipend of Rs. 21,000 a month after three years.

Apply online on Join Indian Army and get a roll number before December 3. The candidates should obtain two copies of the application printout with the roll number. Send one copy of the printout, signed with a photograph affixed and attested by a gazetted officer, along with attested photocopies of 10 and 12 class certificates and mark sheets, to the Additional Directorate General of Recruiting (Rtg-6), TES section, West Block – III, R.K. Puram, New Delhi – 110 066 so as to reach there on or before December 10. The shortlisted candidates will be called for a five-day Services Selection Board interview in Bangalore, Bhopal or Allahabad. Interviews will be held on February or March. The interview will include psychological and group tests. Successful candidates should undergo a medical test before final selection.
