Sales of premium appliances and big televisions in metros came to the rescue of white goods makers such as Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Godrej and Videocon this festive season when the masses mostly stayed away from the festivities.

Several companies fell short of their sales target during the festival season-which started with Onam in mid-August and ended with Diwali last week-despite good demand for high-end products.

"This Diwali, only the affluent consumers with high disposable income did the shopping while sentiments were down with a large section of consumers unlike last year when demand was uniform," Sony India sales head Sunil Nayyar said. "Hence, sales of high-end products remained brisk, while the entry-level segment remained dismal."
