The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, has invited applications for the IISc entrance test to be held on April 28 for admission to various courses.

The courses include integrated Ph.D. programmes in biological, chemical, physical and mathematical sciences. A first-class B.Sc. or equivalent degree in Physics or mathematical, chemical, biological sciences (including B.Pharm., B.V.Sc.&AH and B.Sc. Agriculture) is required to apply. Those with an engineering degree can apply only for the mathematical sciences discipline.

The science faculty offers Ph.D. programmes in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Biochemistry, Ecological Science, High Energy Physics, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, Materials Research, Mathematics, Microbiology and Cell Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Reproduction, Development and Genetics, Neuroscience, Organic Chemistry, Physics and Solid State and Structural Chemistry.

The M.Sc. Engineering and Ph.D. engineering faculty offers courses in Aerospace Engineering, Atmospheric and Ocean sciences, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Automation, Earth Science, Electrical and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Systems Engineering, Instrumentation, Management Studies, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nanoscience and Engineering, Product Design and Manufacturing, Sustainable Technologies and Supercomputer Education and Research.

Ph.D. in interdisciplinary areas covers Bioengineering, Energy, Mathematical Science and Nanoscience and Engineering.

The qualification required for these courses is a second-class Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering, technology, architecture, medicine, agriculture, pharmacy and veterinary sciences or a Master’s degree in science in an appropriate field, including biotechnology, or a Master’s in Economics, Geography, Social Work, Psychology, Management, Mathematics, Statistics, Commerce, Operations Research and Computer Science and Applications as applicable to the respective departments. Besides these, qualifying in one of the following tests with validity as on August 1 is mandatory — CSIR-UGC NET for JRF; UGC-NET for JRF; DBT-JRF; ICMR-JRF; JEST; NBHM; IISc Entrance Test; GATE; or INSPIRE Fellows (for PhD). Qualifying in these tests is not mandatory but desirable for candidates who possess a Master’s degree in engineering or technology; M.Sc. Engineering; MS; or MBA (post-BE/ B.Tech.) and wish to apply for the departments in the engineering faculty.

ME courses are available in Aerospace Engineering, Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Materials, Micro-Electronic Systems, Signal Processing Systems Science and Automation and Telecommunication Engineering. Candidates with a minimum second class in a degree course in the appropriate field of engineering and technology with a valid GATE score are eligible to apply. Selection is based on the GATE score.

M.Tech. courses are available in Climate Science, Computational Science, Earth Science, Electronic Systems Engineering, Instrumentation, Transportation and Infrastructure Engineering. Those with a second-class BE or B.Tech. degree in the appropriate branch or a Master’s degree in Science, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Geology, Instrumentation and Electronics or MCA as applicable to the respective departments may apply.

Application fee is Rs. 600 (Rs. 300 for those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and the physically challenged).

External registration facilities for working professionals are available for Ph.D. in science and engineering subjects. Visit www.iisc.ernet.in/admission for online application.
