Default Chaitra Purnima at Mangaladevi temple, Kerala

Chaitra Purnima festival at Mangaladevi temple was celebrated on 25th April 2013. The ancient temple is dedicated to Goddess Kannaki of Madurai. The temple is located in Peermedu taluk of Idukki district of Kerala, 10 km from Kumily. Only on the festival day, devotees are permitted to visit the temple located at the Kerala - Tamil Nadu border, as it is in the Periyar Tiger Reserve.

The RTO authorities were issuing vehicle pass at the Kumily bus stand even on the festival day after verifing the vehicle records. Devotees were taken to the temple by Jeep from Kumily bus stand at Rs 60. The uphill jeep ride will take 1 hour to the temple depending on the traffic. Jeeps were permitted from 6 am to 3 pm on the festival day.

Many local people trekked to the temple from Ambadi junction, on the Kumily - Thekkady road. I started the trek at 7 am and reached the temple at 10 am. Luckily there were no rain & leech. Pilgrims from Gudalur (Tamil Nadu) climb the hill to reach the Kannaki temple.

Both Kerala and Tamil priests conducted pooja/prayers at the temple. Free food - ponkala, Tomato rice - were served among the pilgrims.

I boarded the 3.30 pm Kumily LS ordinary bus from Kottayam and reached Kumily at 7.30 pm (108 km). I just missed the Changanassery - Chennai TN bus going via Kottayam, Kumily (8 pm), Trichy. The places en route the NH 220 were Manarcaud, Ponkunnam, Kanjirappally, Parathodu, Mundakayam, Peruvanthanam, Kuttikanam, Peermedu, Vandiperiyar, Kumily. The Tamil Nadu border is very near the Kumily bus stand. From Tamil Nadu side there are buses to Periyakulam, Palani and Madurai. The NH 220 further proceeds to Kambam, Theni, Madurai (136 km from Kumily).
