Union Minister of Shipping G K Vasan on Tuesday distributed scholarships amounting to about Rs. 55 lakh to the Marine Engineering students of the Indian Maritime University (IMU) in Chennai. These scholarships were sponsored by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment meant for Scheduled Caste students and by the Shipping Corporation of India under its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment grants up to 10 scholarships per year to Scheduled Caste students of the Indian Maritime University, which is listed as one of the ‘Institutes of Excellence’ by it for grant of scholarships. These students are eligible for receiving the scholarship every year of the four year course.
The Shipping Corporation of India, as part of fulfilling its Corporate Social Responsibility awards a scholarship of Rs. 48,000 per student per year for pursuing the four year B. Tech. Marine Engineering course from the Indian Maritime University. Now, SCI has released a scholarship of about Rs. 26 lakhs to cover 54 beneficiary students of IMU belonging to various batches.
