Default New CD Will Let You Store 10,000GB

So you thought DVD-Rs were cool? New technology being developed, known as HyperCDs, will have the potential to store 10,000 Gigabytes (yes, that’s 10 Terabytes) on a CD sized disk.

The technology uses what’s called "volumetric data burning." What this means is that a HyperCD contains data in 3-Space, not just on a 2 dimensional plane like traditional CDs.

"The new HyperCD has no less that 10,000 information layers (mentioning that these layers are in fact in-depth planar surfaces of the disc) and every one of them can store about 1 GB of data. The layer is made out of a fluorescent substance, which by itself has the property of emitting, in the presence of an optical ray, another optical ray but of another wavelength.

Not only will the ammount of data you can store on a HyperCD be huge, but the data intregity is almost perfect, allowing data to "be safely kept for a period of several millenia. The disc can even be sank in melted crude-iron without damaging the data, according to inventor's statements."

Don't expect it to come too cheap though.

"The HyperCD unit would cost around $1000, and a 10,000 Gb disc would reach about $300. There will be a "light" version of the disc, with a width of 1.2 mm which will cost $30 and would store about 200 GB of data."

All costs aside, think of how many wallpapers you could fit on that baby!

Nice, I will wait for this cd with pleasure

Microsoft will have them release it for fitting Office 2008 on 2 of such discs...
Windows Phat Belly (the one after LongHorn) will take 7 of them (among which, 1 and a half will contain 'notepad.exe' and dependancies, compressed)

So a version of notepad will be 15000 megs? Highly doubtful.
As for "Windows Phat Belly", I dunno where you got that from. After Longhorn, "Windows Blackcomb" will be released around 2010 -2012. This was announced by Microsoft in Feb. 2000.

    I'd say "you've been had".
