Well, if you really need big email you can use this service.

    You get:
    -. Free 3 GB storage
-. Free virus scanning for e-mail attachments!
-. Access from anywhere you have a Web connection!
    -. POP3 / IMAP and WAP Acess!
-. SMS System / Forum / Interactive Services
-. Auto Message Responders & Auto Forwarders
-. Never Have To Delete Again

But IMHO, gmail still the best. Since its from Google. At least there is a big hope that it won't go anywhere. But for unknown company, they can just disappear with all of your message.

How about Yahoo! service. You can have 100MB. Pop3 and SMTP Access for free. Well, it's not as big as the other. But it's reliable. And also you said that you need smtp. Btw, if you download all your email, i don't think you really need a big capacity then.
