    Kanyakumari (Tamil Nadu, India) : Known formerly as Cape Comorin. The sunrise and sunset here attract tourists. Believed to be the abode of Kumari, Virgin goddess. Gandhi memorial and Vivekananda memorial ( on a rocky island, which marks the spot where Swami Vivekananda meditated before attending the Chicago world conference of religions) are nearby.

    Kandla (Gujrat, India) : Tidal port and free trade zone. Handles mostly Petroleum products & fertilisers.

    Kandy (Sri Lanka) : Known as the 'City of the Five hills'. Important Buddhist Sinhalese culture centre with 'Temple of Tooth'.

    Karachi (Pakistan) : First capital of Pakistan (1947). Port and largest country in the city.

    Kiritmati (Kiribati) : Christmas island. Largest atoll in the world. Nuclear testing site in 1950s. Britain annexed it.

    Kremlin (Russia) : The residence of tsars until 1712, political and adminstrative HQ of USSR in 1918.

    Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) : Capital having the highest building Petronas Twin Towers ( Designed by Cesar Pelli and completed in 1996, 452 m with 88 storeys with a sky bridge).

    Ladakh (India) : Leh is the main town in the desert district. Ancient Buddhist monasteries attract tourists to here.

    La Paz (Bolivia) : The highest capital in the world (3631 m).

    Lhasa (Tibet, China) : At 3684 m, was the highest capital in the world before domination of Tibet by China.

    Leshan (China) : World's tallest Buddha statue (71 m) aving 24 hour electronic bodyguard.

    Liechtenstein (C. Europe) : A small principality of 157 sq km, with very high per capita income.

    Lopburi : East of Bangkok, famous for the thousands of monkeys that live with human beings in the town.

    Madagascar (Indian Ocean) : World's fourth largest island, settled by Indonesians in 1 st c AD.

    Majuli (Assam, India) : World's largest inhabited river island.

    Mali (Africa) : Ruled by France 1881 - 95, territory of French Sudan till 1959.

    Medina (Saudi Arabia) : Islamic holy city that contains trhe tomb of Prophet Mohammed.

    Mont Blanc (France - Italy border) : Highest mountain in the Alps. There is a 12 km tunnel connecting the two countries.

    Mount Ararat (Turkey) : Extinct volcanic peak. Noah's ark is said to have come to rest here.

    Mount Kailas (Tibet) : The world's highest pilgrimage site at 5700 m.

    Mount Li (China) : A life size army of about 7500 painted terracotta figures deployed in military formation underground was discovered here in 1974. First Chinese emperor Qin Shihuangdi buried here.

    Mumbai (India) : India's largest city, seaport, industrial city, commercial capital andf capital of Maharashtra state.

    New York (USA) : The country's largest city. The Dutch who colonised it called it New Amsterdam (1625). In 1644, Britain captured it and renamed New York after the king's brother, Duke of York. Largest American port.

    Nagpur (India) : City on Nag river in Maharashtra. Dr. Ambedkar and 2 lakh followers embraced Buddhism here.

    Nauru (Western Pacific) : World's smallest republic, 21 sq km. Known for Phosphate deposits. Independent in 1968.

    Nepal : The only official Hindu kingdom in the world. Mt Everest is located near capital Kathmandu.

    Niagara (USA) : Niagara falls on the US - Canada border.

    Panama (Central America) : Occupies the Isthmus of Panama, the strip of land that links North and South America. USA built the Panama canal, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. In 1903 US got sovereignty over the Panama canal zone. On 1 Jan 2000, USA handed the canal ownership to Panama.

    Oxford (UK) : City on the Thames. Oxford university is one of the oldest in Europe (12 th c).

    Panaji (Goa, India) : Capital at the mouth of the Mandovi river. In 1843 it become the capital of Portuguese territories in India.

    Paris (France) : Capital and a main tourist centre. HQ of UNESCO. Centre of high fashion and luxury goods. Eiffel tower, Louvre museum, Elysee palace, Paris university (1170) etc.

    Pearl Harbour (US) : Naval base was bombed by Japan on Dec 7, 1941. This brought USA into WW II.

    Pedra Furada (Brazil) : Rock shelter, believed to be the earliest human settlement in America.

    Pentagon (USA) : A huge five sided building in Arlington, Hq of US Defence Dept. On Sep 11, 2001 part of the building was destroyed by terrorists who crashed an aircraft into Pentagon.

    Pune (India) : National Defence Academy, Osho International Commune, Rajgad fort (Capital of Maratha from 1750 to 1817), Aga Khan Palace (Gandhiji was imprisoned here for two years).

    Puri (Orissa) : Pilgrim centre, Jagannath temple (12 th c) and beach.
    Ramoji film city (Hyderbad, India) : One of the best equipped film studios in the world.

    Srirangapattana (Karnataka, India) : An island fortress in the Kaveri river near Mysore. Site of battles between the British and Tipu Sultan. In 1799 Tipu was killed by the British.

    Tawang (Arunachal Pradesh, India) : Tawang monastery, where the sixth Dalai Lama was born, is the second oldest Buddhist monastery in the world after Lhasa, and the largest in India.

    Sarajevo (Yugoslavia) : WW I had its begining here when in 1914 the Archduke of Fancis Ferdinanad of Austria - Hungary was assasianted by a Serb.

    Shanghai (China) : Largest city, seaport, industrial, cultural and educational centre.

    Siberia (Russia - Kazakhstan) : Land of rich minerals and extremely cold climate. Trasns - Siberian railway (1891 - 1905) is the longest in the world (9335 km).

    Stromboli (Italy) : A 3038 ft high volcano from which lava flows continuously. It attracts tourists to the island.
