Many web hosting providers do not provide FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Imagine a website consisting of images, thumbnails, folders and files inside. You can easily run into a website with hundreds, or even thousands, of files. Some providers provide an interface where you need to upload one file at a time by browsing to the file on your computer and adding it to the upload que. With FTP, once it is set up, you can add all your files with a single click. When I look for web providers they must have FTP capability.
