nessus, vulnerability assessment (nessus.org/)
snort, IDS

some of the distro's (gentoo) can be complicated to install, if you pick something like SuSe or a lot of people have been recommending mepis linux recently, you should have a grapical install, will only take an hour or two, it'll probably guide you through the process toocan you tell me the computer specific requirement here to use Linux...

I use a free registry cleaning program called Registry First Aid, the link is for version 3.3.1, however a newer version is avaliable version 3.4 but I am unsure if it is still freeware. Check it out from the developers web site.
