I built my own firewall as found from www.zelow.no which does the job nicely although you need some knowledge of how to write IP Tables.
I would suggest newer users should use Sygate as a software firewall and learn how IP tables work. Hardware is the best way to stay safe online.

If you don't use a firewall you are very stupid. It isn't a matter of 'I haven't got anything worth stealing' or 'I don't care'. People can put things ONTO your computer that you'll never notice are munching resources via your system32 folder. You're probably trafficking child porn and fraudulent bank details without knowing it I pay for my internet connection for ME to use, I am damned if I am going to share it with scummy crackers who want to use my bandwidth for criminal actions.

I've had no virus, spyware, trojans or worse for over 2 years by sensible net use. If you use Windows, and want to stay safer then I suggest, a firewall, Spybot, AVG anti-virus AND a copy of Hijackthis in case of problems that you can use to show techies the logfile from it should problems arise. Do not use Internet Explorer, choose Firefox, Opera or Mozilla.

Always prompt for cookies, you'll be surprised how many bad things will try to add themselves from dodgy sites. Do not click or download from suspicious links. Do not use cracked software and keygens. Do not accept files over instant messenger programs.

Choose a mail client other than Outlook or Outlook Express, Mozilla has a built-in one or they also make a stand alone one called Thunderbird which is easy to configure to keep the nasty stuff out.

Outpost Firewall is the bet one I tried so far, I been through Norton, Zone Alarm, Kerio, Bit defender black Ice and some other that I cant remember.
The good part of it that it got so many features added to it if you compare it to other firewalls. I got java disabled as well in my browser

best firewall is probably that one thats integrated into a router ;) But for software firewalls I like zonealarm. I don´t expect ever to be really "hacked" so it´s enough protection for me. And it´s pretty good, but the best: it´s free ;)

McAfee is what i use. It manages to integrate to all my stuff and doesnt cut some software off when your trying to do something :)
