NEW DELHI: India's early exit from the Twenty20 World Cup has led to speculation about Mahendra Singh Dhoni's future as the team's Twenty20 captain.

Although the BCCI is not giving indications about any such move, a source said the Board is very unhappy with the team, which did not win a single match in the Super Eights stage of the mega event for the second year in a row.

"Obviously we are not happy with the performance of the team but it does not mean that we are thinking of removing Dhoni as Twenty20 captain. These are media speculation and we cannot comment on such speculation," a top BCCI source said.

Dhoni is under fire for his tactical blunders during the World Cup and according to another source, the selectors want to exert pressure on him by putting him on notice when they sit down to select the Indian team for the Asia Cup next month.

The source said Dhoni would be given the captaincy on a tournament-to-tournament basis.

Although he has led the team to the top of the ICC Test rankings and to the number two spot in the ODI rankings, Dhoni's captaincy has not been upto expectations in the Twenty20 format and the selectors are contemplating trying new options.

The names of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir are doing the rounds for the job.

Indian players went into the World Cup after participating in the six-week-long IPL, which ended just five days before the mega event in the West Indies.

After being knocked out, Dhoni, who led the team to the title in 2007, had stated that IPL's post-match parties had affected players' fitness level.
