Athletico madrid beat liverpool 1-0 at their home in the first leg encounter. Diego Forlan scored the only goal. In another match, Hamburg drew 0-0 against Fulham at home.
The second leg semi final encounters saw Liverpool and Hamburg SV crash out of the UEFA Europa league. Fulham who had drawn with Hamburg 0-0 in the first leg were able to beat their opponents after coming back from behind 2-1 thanks to goals from Davies and Gera. Fulham win on aggregate 2-1 and Hamburg spoiled their chance of playing in their home ground in the final.
In the other semifinal Liverpool were trying to overturn their first leg deficit of 1 goal at home against Athletico madrid. Liverpool were in good position to go through after the only goal of Aquilani in normal time which then lead to extra time (agg.: 1-1). Benayoon scored after that and the reds were looking pretty for another European final. But the man who scored in the first leg, Diego Forlan was again able to score this time on the halfway mark of the extra time and his away goal meant that Athletico Madrid would play Fulham in the final at Hamburg, Germany.
I think that atletico will beat fulham in the final
Athletico certainly have very high quality individual players like Aguero and Forlan. But Fulham have been playing the best football of their recent seasons, and are very good playing as a team. Specially in the defensive department. It will be a highly contested match for sure.
A double strike from Diego Forlan ensured the cup for Athletico against Fulham last night.
The spanish side took the lead through Forlan, but Davies scored to equal things up and the match went to extra time. But the Fulham hearts were broken, when Forlan, who scored in both legs of semi finals against Liverpool, scored to make sure the cup went to spain. It was triumph for the spanish side, but disappointment for Fulham who fought bravely throughout the tournament.
