Cochin Airport





Cochin is an important port city and spice trading center of Kerala. Cochin Airport, also known as Nedumbassery International Airport in Kerala, is India's first aviation venture owned by public. Cochin International Airport is the first International Airport in the country outside the ambit of the Government of India. Cochin Airport was executed with massive public participation in a record time. Cochin International Airport is a state Government sponsored Project, with public participation mostly from Non Resident Indians (NRIs) of Kerala from all over the world.

Cochin Airport is owned by Cochin International Airport Limited, a public limited company in which the Kerala Government has the single largest stake. CIAL is managed by a board of directors comprising political leaders, industrialists, NRIs and representatives of financial institutions. Besides the Kerala government, CIAL's shareholders include the Federal Bank, State Bank of Travancore, Bharat Petroleum, Air-India, Housing and Urban Development Corporation and nearly 10,000 Non Resident Indians from 30 countries.

Cochin Airport is built on a 1300-acre plot and boasts of having India's second longest runway (3400 meters). Its parking space can accommodate some 1,500 cars. Kochi Airport’s domestic terminal has 100,000 square feet of built-in area and the international terminal occupies 140,000 square feet. The airport has been constructed to enable any type of wide-bodied aircraft to land, with state of the art facilities. History
The history of Cochin International Airport dates back to October 1991, when the State Government decided to pursue the new airport project, instead of expanding the existing naval airport. The Ministry of Civil Aviation showed its green signal to the project, in March 1993. In May 25, 1999, Cochin International Airport was formally inaugurated by the then President of India - K. R. Narayanan. In June 1999, the domestic operations were shifted to this airport, from naval airport at Willingdon Island. The inaugural flight from Cochin International Airport was plied by Air India, on June 10, 1999.

Calicut Airport



Calicut Airport is one of the three international airports of Kerala, located at Karippur in Malappuram district, near Calicut (Kozhikode). It received the status of an international airport on February 2, 2006, which led to development in its infrastructure, for handling the operation of international flights from its terminal. Currently, it holds the distinction of being the 12th busiest airport in India, and 11th in cargo handling, in terms of its passenger traffic. Formation
Calicut airport gained its sanction after a long period of struggle, which began in 1977, under the leadership of freedom fighter late K.P. Kesava Menon. In the 1990s, Gulf Malayalis played an important part in the development of the airport - they collected funds for the purpose, when the Union Government said it did not have funds. This led to the inception of, the Malabar International Airport Development Society, which helped raise funds for the airport's development. Consequently, major developments of facilities, such as extension of runway from 6,000 feet to 9,000 feet to facilitate operation of big-bodied aircraft, were carried out, with loans from HUDCO.

Modernization
Airports Authority of India has played a vital role in the modernization of Calicut Airport. The facilities provided in the airport have been increased, which has paved the way for the steady increase in the passenger traffic from the airport as well as the operations of foreign airlines. A number of airlines, operating from the airport, have sought night parking facility. Currently, the airport offers 10 parking bays. International departure terminal started its operations on May 14, 2007. In the recent time, a spacious international arrival terminal has also been opened to passengers, which is as spacious as the departure terminal.

Currently, five domestic airlines are operating from Calicut Airport. The national carriers Air India (with destination to Mumbai, Trivandrum, Chennai), Air India Express (with destination to Cochin, Mangalore, Mumbai, Trivandrum), and Indian Airlines (flying to Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Mumbai) operate from this airport. The private carriers, operating from this airport, are JetLite (Mumbai) and Kingfisher Airlines (to Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, Goa, Mangalore, Trivandrum).

Trivandrum Airport



Trivandrum International Airport is one of the three international airports in Kerala. Since a large number of people from Kerala are working in the Gulf, most of the international flights flying from Trivandrum International Airport cater to the Gulf region. With the emergence of Kerala as a hot tourist destination, Thiruvananthapuram Airport is also handling a large number of foreign tourists. It has daily flights to many international cities, like Kuwait, Dubai, Singapore, Male, Colombo, Sharjah, Muscat, Bahrain, Doha, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi. The airport is a convenient connecting point to neighboring SAARC nations, like Sri Lanka and Maldives, as well as Middle East and South East Asian countries.

History
Trivandrum Airport was established as a part of the Kerala Flying Club, in the year 1932. Its international operations were launched by Air India, to Middle Eastern cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, Doha, Kuwait City, Bahrain, and Dahran, during the latter half of the 1970s & early 1980s. It became an international airport after its up-gradation in 1991. With this, Thiruvananthapuram Airport became the first international airport in India to be located outside metropolitan cities.

Airport Structure
Trivandrum International Airport has two terminals - Terminal 1 & 2. Terminal 1 serves domestic flights and terminal 2 serves international flights. The international terminal has two gates. It has basic amenities like cafes, a book shop and an executive lounge, run by Muthoot Plaza. A cyber café is also available to access the internet, for a fee.

Modernization
A third terminal for Trivandrum Airport is being worked on, since 2006, to share the increasing load of international passengers. It is being constructed on the city side, by the Airports Authority of India. Modern facilities, such as escalators, elevators and aerobridges, will be provided for the passengers. A Common Users Terminal Equipment (CUTE) will also be installed, to allow the passengers to check-in at any counter. The entrance to the terminal will be from the Chaka-Eenchakkal Road. The new terminal, with an annual handling capacity of 13.3 lakh, is expected to open by January 2010.
