    Much of kerala's exotic appeal is centred in the highland area of the western ghats. Rising to an average height of 1520 m, the tropical forests of the ghats house rich flora and fauna. Not to speak of expansive, loamy plantations of tea, coffee, rubber and fragrant cardamom.

    Munnar - a hill station on the Western Ghats has lakes, reservoirs, forests and tea estates. It is called the Nature-Lovers's Paradise. It stands at the confluence of three rivers - the Muthirappuzh, Nallathanni and Kundala. Moonu in tamil means "three" and aar "river". It is a major center of Kerala's tea industry.

    Munnar is the best known of Kerala's hill stations. There are many colonial bungalows and buildings in Munnar. Munnar is also near several wildlife sanctuaries including the Erivakulam National Park, which is home to the rare Nilgiri Tahr. This mountain goat is extremely endangered and is only found on the heights of the Nilgiri Hills and some nearby parts of the Western Ghats. Anaimudi Hill, the tallest peak in South India can be seen in the Erivakulam Wildlife Sanctuary on tours of Kerala with Kerala Backwaters

    Among the plants found in Munnar is the Neelkurinji, which blossoms once every 12 years. It is the blue blossoms of the Neelkurinji plant that give the Nilgiri Hills or the Blue Hills their name due to their distinctive color.

    Athirapally - The Athirapally Waterfalls in Trichur, Kerala, are often referred to as the Niagara Falls of India. They come crashing down from a height of 80 feet, and are an amazing sight to behold. Athirappally Waterfalls is located 78 kms from Kochi (Cochin), located at the entrance to Sholayar ranges, this waterfall is a popular picnic spot. Affording to the onlookers, one of the most bewitching sights, Combined with the greenery, it infuses freshness into any tired soul.

    The soothing sounds take you to the nature's most relaxing, rejuvenating place. Starting calmly from the high ranges, and crashing through gorges overhung with trees, this waterfall is one of the best places in India to re-capture a real sense of the classical idea of the "Picturesque". It is not just calm and sweet, but something wild and natural.

    Nilambur - is famous for its teak plantations. The oldest teak plantation of the world, the Conolly's Plot is just 2 Kms. from Nilambur town. Four Kms. away from Nilambur on the side of Nilambur-Gudallur road, is world's first Teak Museum and sub centre of Kerala Forest Research Institute. In the Teak Museum, a visitor can have at hand information on all aspects of teak.

    Rows of bamboo trees on the way to the museum enhance the beauty of the area. You will be welcomed into the carved teak door with a painting of the Kannimara teak at the entrance of the museum. It is the most ancient living teak tree in the world placed within Parambikulam Wild Life Sanctuary in the Palghat district, Kerala. Nilambur Kovilakam still basks in its old glory, though the power and riches of its golden years had to be relinquished long since. But even now, the Kovilakam provides an identity to the town, and is held in great respect by the older generation in Nilambur.

    Thekkady - The very sound of the word Thekkady or Periyar Tiger Reserve conjures up images of Elephants, unending chains of hills and spice-scented plantations. Periyar forest has one of the finest wildlife reserves in India and spread across the entire district are picturesque plantations and hill towns that hold great apportunities for treks and mountain walks.

    The Periyar Na tional park is the main attraction of Thekkady. This famous wildlife sanctuary is located in the banks of artificial Periyar lake. Periyar National park is fully covered by dense forests and green grass lands. Thus, this has become the perfect locations for wildlife such as the great Indian tigers, elephants, lion tailed macaques, gaurs, deer, sambars.

    Periyar tiger Reserve, Thekkady, is an example of nature's bounty, with great scenic charm, rich bio diversity and providing veritable visitor satisfaction.

    Sprawled over an area of 777 Sq .km., Periyar is one of the 27 tiger reserves in India.

    Ponmudi - Perched at an altitude of over 100 m above sea level on the Western Ghats, the shimmering green waters of the winding streams and verdant woods of Ponmudi do not spare anybody. Trekking is a passion with the visitors to Ponmudi, lying within easy driving distance from Trivandrum.

    In Trivandrum one can visit the Museum with its profusion of gables and turrets. A repository of fine works of art, the chief attraction here is the 250-year-old temple car made for Lord Vishnu, artistically designed and ornamented. Besides this, objects carved out of wood, models of temple, antique jewelry, etc., make the museum worth a visit.

    Lakkidi - One of the highest locations in Wayanad, commands a picturesque scenery. It is about 58 km north east of Kozhikode and 5 km south of Vythiri. Lakkidi, the gateway of Wayanad, lies atop Thamarassery, a ghat pass at an elevation of 700 m above mean sea level.

    The lofty mountain peaks, the gurgling stream, luxuriant vegetation and the birds eye view of the deep valley on the south, with its winding roads, are breath taking. The 12 km long journey from Adivaram to Lakkidi through ghat road with nine hairpin bends amidst thick forests, is a fascinating experience.

    Begur sanctuary - Location : About 20 km east of Mananthavady, Wayanad district, north Kerala.The district of Wayanad lies on an elevated picturesque mountainous plateau in the Western Ghats. Historians are of the opinion that organized human life existed in these parts of Kerala at least ten centuries before Christ.

    In this virgin land, which has not seen much human habitation later, is the Begur Wildlife Sanctuary. The forests here are amongst the most beautiful locales of Kerala. The region has a wealth of diverse species of plants and animals and is of great interest to nature lovers

    Idukki - The unspoiled natural queen of Kerala, a tourist paradise, "Idukki". This is the most gifted district of Kerala. About 1500 Sq.Km. of its area is reserved forest, much of which is home to a variety of flora and fauna. This forest area house wild life like, tigers, deer, Indian bisons and monkeys. Streams, valleys and hills combine to make Idukki an ideal year-round holiday destination.

    The scenic beauty of Idukki is unique in every respect. It has nothing to boast of the rise and fall of dynasties, but it has housed a flourishing civilization. The Mangaladevi Temple dedicated to Kannaki of ancient Tamil literature, Marayur Caves known as ‘Muniyaras’ with ancient cave paintings, Muthalakkudam Church built in the 13th century, Minar mosque built by Vadakkumkoor Rajas etc speak volumes of the civilization that flourished in Idukki. PAINAVU is the district Headquarters.

    Marayoor - a hill station, popularly chosen by honeymoon couples, research and scientific groups and movie makers, due to the silent and comfortable atmosphere to their holidays stay and related jobs, is ideally located at the foot hills of western ghats amidst kerala sandal wood reserves. the wind here is so medicated because of rare species of herbal plants in vast collections. marayoor is very easily reachable by munnar (one hour) and towards udumalpet, coimbatore road. tourists from both directions (east from munnar and west from coimbatore) specifically shows interest to stop here for its own specialities. above all, they have found the place to be free of contaminated pollution from that of the town. those from various stress of life find it to have a breath easy atmosphere and sure comfort from even that of ayurvedic facilities which eases their body, mind and soul. elevation is 3200 ft. above 'msl - meters above sea level'. most part of the year is sunny and pleasant except during monsoons.

    Nellyampathy - Superabundant greens, celestial clouds , balmy air and mesmerizing scenic beauty describe the charm of Nellyampathy. Its beautiful valleys are interspresed with tea and coffee plantations. It is located in the Palakkad district of Kerala. The most interesting spot in Nellyampathy is the Padagiri Peak, the highest in Nellyampathy. Adventure lovers will surely have a great time here, as this hill station offers exciting adventurous opportunities such as mountain climbing and trekking. Leave behind your monotonous routine for a few days and plan a trip to Nelliyampathi hill station to refresh yourself.

    Wagamon - Pay a visit to this winsome hill station and you are sure to be spell-bound by its beauty. There are many beautiful lakes around Wagamon, where you can spend some quality time with your loved ones. Fun activities like boating can be enjoyed here. The waterfalls in Wagamon are really worth seeing. The very sight of the cool misty waters of these waterfalls is refreshing.     Pythal Mala - As bewitching as Kerala, Pythal Mala is a hill station with a difference. It is located near the Kerala-Karnataka border, about 64 km north of Kannur, and at an elevation of 1372 m. Adventure enthusiasts will get ample opportunities of trekking here. Trekking to the top of the hill is very exciting. The arresting feature of this hill station is its rich flora and fauna.     Devikulam - If you were to make a list of the most famous hill stations of Kerala, Devikulam would figure high up. It is simply enchanting! It is blessed with lush green vegetation, verdant hills, wild yet beautiful flowers, lovely lake and much more. Devikulam is located at a distance of 16 km from Munnar and is easily accessible. There is also a beautiful lake in Devikulam, held in high esteem by Hindus. The word Devikulam means “the lake of Goddess”. There is a Hindu Mythological legend attached to it.

    The legend goes that goddess Sita( Lord Rama's consort) once came to this lake and bathed in it. Since then, the hill station is known as Devikulam. The striking feature of this lake is that it has a fountain spring, from which flows healthy mineral water. The recreational options offered here are hiking, trekking and mountaineering. Well, the charm of Devikulam does not end here, there is something more for the adventurous tourists. Pay a visit to the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary located at about an hour's drive from Devikulam, to experience the wilderness of Kerala. The main attraction of this wildlife sanctuary is the endangered wild life species — grizzled giant squirrel and star tortoise. The climate of Devikulam is pleasant throughout the year.

    Chithirapuram - Retaining its old world charm, Chithirapuram is a great place for holidays. Scenic beauty, peace, and entertainment are found in plenty here. It is dotted with traditional cottages, bungalows, playgrounds and courts, giving a real taste of an old world charm.     Chembra Peak - Does trekking push your adrenalin level to a high? If yes, then Chembra Peak is where you should head to. Located in the heart of Wayanad district in the state of Kerala, at 2100 m above sea level, Chembra Peak is enveloped in natural beauty. It is the highest peak in the district. The experience of trekking to the top of the Peak is filled with thrill to the hilt.

    Meppady is the nearest town from where the Peak is easily accessible by foot. However, one needs to take permission from the forest office in Meppady before embarking on this trek.     Mattupetty - No less than a paradise, Mattupetty hill station attracts tourists from across the globe. You must see its beauty to believe it. Nestled in the Western Ghats mountain Range of South India, Mattupetty is like a fairy land fashioned out of springs, rivers, forests and gardens. It is elevated to an altitude of 1700 m. When you travel to Muttupetty don't miss the Mattupetty lake and the dam.

    Boating facilities are provided here by DTPC Idukki, and it is truly great fun. Two main attractions in Muttupetty are the Rose Garden, where a wide variety of roses can be seen, and the highly specialized Dairy Farm, an Indo-Swiss Livestock Project. Kundala tea plantation is another attraction which adds beauty to this wonderful hill station.     Peruvannamuzhi - Peruvannamuzhi is a tourist destination of exceptional beauty, located in the Calicut district of Kerala, South India. The beautiful garden amidst rolling hills in Pervannamuzhi is very popular with tourists. In fact, it serves as a picnic spot where people come to refresh themselves. The most interesting attraction here is the artificial lake reservoir, which is dotted with many tiny islands.

It is located in the north eastern tip of Kerala, about 100 km from Kozhikode at an altitude of 1300 m above sea level. Coffee, tea, cardamom, pepper and rubber are grown in plenty here. So plan a tour to these plantations and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, which are exquisite and delicately flavored.

    Clean fresh air, picturesque surroundings, pleasant weather and friendly people make Vythiri a perfect tourist destination. The unique attraction of Vythiri are the Tree houses, built on trees above 90 ft from the ground, in the tropical rain forest. A stay on such a tree house is a wonderful experience. Long rope bridges hanging over the streams in Vythiri are something, which tourists love to see.

    Munnar is a lovely hill station in Kerala. Most tourists favor Munnar and that is understandable given the panoramic views, the clean surroundings and the refreshing mountain pastures.
