How to Get a Whirlpool Fridge to Defrost

Defrosting a refrigerator is necessary to ensure that it is running at optimal efficiency. Defrosting involves removing any ice and water buildup that affects the temperature in the refrigerator. Most Whirlpool refrigerators have an automatic mechanism that regularly defrosts the unit, but it is also possible to manually defrost a Whirlpool fridge if it is not equipped with automatic defrosting or the mechanism is damaged.

1 Unplug the refrigerator from the electrical outlet. Quickly remove all of the food and ice cubes from the Whirlpool refrigerator. Place the food in a cooler with ice or in another refrigerator to avoid spoilage.

2 Pull out all the drawers and shelves to facilitate air circulation inside the refrigerator. Leave the door open

3 Place towels under the fridge and on the shelves to absorb water from melting ice. Change the towels when they become soaked. The time it takes defrosting to complete will depend on the amount of ice buildup.

4 When defrosting is completed clean the interior of the fridge with a mild soap, water and a clean cloth. Wipe down the unit with a dry towel. Replace the drawers and shelves.

5 Turn the fridge on again. Leave running for two to three hours to give it time to cool again. Return the food to the fridge.
