    Default Sleeping during Pregnancy

    During pregnancy you may find yourself wrestling in bed trying to get comfortable before falling asleep. Unfortunately, your regular sleep positions may no longer work for you during pregnancy. There are a number of reasons that cause this new discomfort, but there are some positions that you can try that may help you get your much needed rest.

    Why am I so uncomfortable in my normal positions?

    When you are pregnant your body goes through a variety of changes. These changes tend to disrupt your usual peaceful slumber. Reasons may include:

    * Increased size of abdomen
    * Back pain
    * Heartburn
    * Shortness of breath
    * Insomnia

    What are the best sleep positions?

    The best sleep position during pregnancy is "SOS" (sleep on side). Even better is to sleep on your left side. Sleeping on your left side will increase the amount of blood and nutrients that reach the placenta and your baby. Keep your legs and knees bent and a pillow between your legs.

    * If you find that you are having problems with back pain, use the "SOS" position and try placing a pillow under your abdomen as well.
    * If you are experiencing heartburn during the night, you may want to try propping your upper body with pillows.
    * In late pregnancy you may experience shortness of breath; try lying on your side or propped up with pillows.

    These suggestions may not sound completely comfortable, especially if you are used to sleeping on your back or stomach, but try them out and you may find that they work. Keep in mind that you may not stay in one position all night and rotating positions is fine.
    What positions should I avoid?

    Sleeping on your back: This can cause problems with backaches, breathing, digestive system, hemorrhoids, low blood pressure and decrease in circulation to your heart and your baby. This is a result of your abdomen resting on your intestines and major blood vessels (the aorta and vena cava).

    Sleeping on your stomach: When you are farther along in your pregnancy, your abdomen undergoes physical changes and makes it more difficult for you to lay on your stomach.

    How to Travel During Pregnancy

    1: Check with your doctor first.

    Before embarking on a trip, check with your doctor to make sure traveling is okay. In most cases, travel is acceptable if youíre having an uncomplicated pregnancy.

    2: Schedule trips for the second trimester of pregnancy.

    This is usually the best time to travel during pregnancy. Youíve probably already experienced the symptoms of morning sickness and will feel most comfortable confined to a plane or car during this time. Itís best to avoid air travel after thirty-six weeks in the event that pre-term labor should occur.

    3: Take frequent breaks.

    When traveling either by car or by air, itís important to walk around at least every hour to reduce the risk of blood clots. If traveling by car, stop at rest areas and take a five minute stretch and walk.

    4: Locate medical facilities in your designated travel area.

    If youíll be traveling during pregnancy, particularly during your third trimester, it will be important to know how to reach hospitals and clinics in your area that can handle pregnancy related problems or complications. Make a list of hospitals and clinics along with their phone numbers and keep them handy in the event of an emergency.

    5: Wear comfortable shoes.

    Legs and feet tend to swell when youíre pregnant, particularly in warm climates. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and support hose, if necessary. Try to elevate your legs as much as possible to reduce swelling.

    6: Drink lots of water.

    When youíre pregnant, itís important to stay well hydrated. Bring along a thermos of water to drink at regular intervals on your trip. Make sure you have access to a bathroom since pregnancy can increase the need to urinate.

    Tips To Avoid Back Pain During Prenancy

    About 75% of pregnant women mostly experience back pain during their pregnancy. Generally the back pain is pregnancy related, and it usually subsides once the baby is born. The growing uterus and the developing baby lead to many changes in the womenís body and cause back pain during pregnancy.

    To have a comfortable sleeping position is very important in preventing back strain. Try not to sleep on your back, instead sleep on the side with pillows. Pillows help to support your tummy and back. Keep a pillow behind your back and put one pillow between the knees to hold the tummy. Sleeping with pillows support helps to stabilize the pressure on the back.

    Exercise

    I got one of those long pillows and slept with it under my hip on my side, which alleviated the pain of the hip bone well enough to sleep for a couple hours at a time.
