AVG LinkScanner is a component of AVG's antivirus and anti-spyware software for Windows. It is used to identify online threats instantly and prevent users from visiting hacked or otherwise "poisoned" sites. LinkScanner works in conjunction with the other security software to provide an additional layer of protection.

Search-Shield
The Search-Shield function of LinkScanner scans search results from Google, Yahoo! and MSN, and provides a safety ranking for each website before the user clicks on it. Dangerous sites are blocked.

Active-Surf Shield
The Active-Surf Shield function scans the individual pages behind the links the user clicks on and the addresses he enters into the browser. The user is prevented from visiting dangerous sites.

Real-Time Scanning
AVG LinkScanner works in real-time, instead of relying on blacklists which often aren't updated to include short-lived threats and are impossible to keep entirely current.

Computer Requirements
LinkScanner works with Windows operating systems XP and Vista and with the browsers Internet Explorer (6.0+) and Firefox (2.0+). A version for Macintosh is in development.

Cost
Beginning with version 8.5, the AVG LinkScanner is included with the AVG AntiVirus Free Edition at no additional cost.
