Strange are the ways in which the thought processes operate in our country where the works of creativity are the easiest target to attack as they ensure maximum media publicity. Prateik's song from his film, EKK DEEWANA THA, 'Hosanna' is one such work of creativity that has been caught in cross fire, in spite of the fact that this song already has made waves in Tamil, and Rahman has just carried the tune from his original creation in Tamil from the film VINNAITHAANDI VARUVAAYA. The scores are the same and so is the interlude, 'Hosanna', in both the versions of the song, only the lyrics have been translated into Hindi for EKK DEEWANA THA.

But as soon as it made its debut, there was a motley voice of protest against the song for use of the word 'Hosanna' in the interlude and prelude. The moot point of protest is that Hosanna is associated with Christianity and therefore it is derogatory when it is being used in a song for a beloved. Well, one has to understand that a word or a metaphor does not have only one meaning, but it has contextual interpretations, and one cannot dictate terms based on his or her interpretation about the meaning of a word. 'Hosanna', which has been used in the EKK DEEWANA THA's song has been used to praise the beloved and has been used in its sense to communicate a "shout of praise, worship and adoration". Is it not what our business of lyric writing has been doing for years by playing with the words drawn from various languages and cultures?

Even Gulzar had to face flake for writing 'Paanv Ke Neeche Jannat Hogi', when it was interpreted in a literary manner as the world view is that Jannat is in the sky where gods reside, but the moot point is whether Gulzar meant what was interpreted when he had penned this song for DIL SE.

The moot point is that the ever prying eye of media more so the electronic media to catch the TRP is ever ready to highlight such issues to garner TRPs. Controversial lyrics have been written from time to time, but the controversies have rarely made news, and breaking news at that, as it has become the norm now. May be, the time has now come for the industry to stand up and oppose censor on creativity, as it is tad difficult to see that the sensibilities of each and every class and creed of the society is not violated either overtly or covertly, intentionally or unintentionally. Indeed a tough ask for those who are associated with creative industry.
