I suggest that you download the free 30-day trial version. If you like it, and you are a student of some sort (preschool-high school, college, grad school, etc.), I suggest that you get the Educational Version.
I have the Educational Version for MX 2004 and it is almost the same thing as the normal version, and so far I haven't found any differences between the two MX 2004 versions. They basically take one advanced part out then sell it for half-price for students who can't afford the regular version. I checked and the EDU Version is $249, and the Regular Version is $699.

Use Swishmax
For beginners a sofware called swishmax(http://www.swishzone.com) is a good start. It uses the same Flash technology used in flashmx.
I have created the game KBC2 using simple scripts. U can view it at http://kiransmile.bizhat.com
In swishmax any object is animated using frames ( same as in flash )
But advantage of swishmax is it has 1000s of readymade effects. Animating text is very easy in swishmax as there are lots of premade effects which only need to be assigned to the text object.
Thats all for now
I f you want more info i can help you out.
