Tutorials

W3Schools.com is one of the most comprehensive sites for learning web design and related web technologies. It has well designed tutorials and hands-on activities for learning everything from the basics of web design through more advanced web development and programming. Beginners should start with the HTML and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) before moving on to more advanced topics, like JavaScript, DHTML (Dynamic HTML), and AJAX (a JavaScript-based technology).

HTML Editors

Adobe Dreamweaver is a very powerful graphical HTML editor, and an industry standard among professional web designers. It integrates with other Adobe Creative Suite applications, such as Photoshop and Illustrator, facilitating web design workflow. Microsoft Expression Web is web editor, and part of Microsoft's Expression suite of design software. It is less expensive and easier to learn than Adobe's products, but also less powerful. Learning the basics in either of these suites is easy, and both can handle advanced web design. For those on a budget, Nvu and PageBreeze are good graphical editors. They are easy to learn, and available free of charge.

Drawing and Image Editing

Paint and drawing programs are a must-have for any web toolkit. GIMP and Inkscape are popular, free, well supported tools. GIMP is a powerful photo editing and painting program, similar to Adobe Photoshop and nearly as powerful. Inkscape is a vector drawing program similar to Adobe Illustrator. Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator are industry standard among professional web developers, but very expensive.

Generators

There are hundreds of generators online that automatically create buttons, backgrounds, charts, icons, color palettes, and much, much more. Colors on the Web offers several tools for choosing, generating, and analyzing colors and color schemes, as well as learning about color in web pages. ButtonGenerator.com and CoolText.com offer free generators for making custom buttons, logos, and other graphics.

Testing

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) offers validation tools to test for errors in HTML, CSS, and other web design languages. Any hand-edited code should be validated. A second important test is cross-browser testing. Most beginners make the mistake of only testing their pages in their favorite browser. Every browser renders web pages a little bit differently. BrowserShots.org and BrowserCam.com provide online browser testing, saving designers from needing to download and install dozens of web browsers.

Other Tools

Filezilla is an FTP file transfer program that supports most web designer upload needs. There are endless sites offering free website, CSS, and other templates, such as FreeWebTemplates.com and the JavaScript Source offers cut-and-paste scripts for adding a variety of special effects and interactivity to web pages, as well as JavaScript and AJAX help and tutorials.
