This is Jaguar’s fabulous new F-Type sportscar — the long-awaited successor to the legendary E-Type. The 180mph two-seater was camouflaged in the first picture issued yesterday to keep its looks a surprise before it goes on sale early next year.

But it will be almost identical to the C-X16 concept coupé that caused a sensation at a motor show in Germany last year.

Eager Jag fans have been waiting for a new sportscar ever since production of the E-Type ended in 1972. That car was so successful it even ate into Ferrari sales because of its affordable price and 150mph performance.

The F-Type will come in convertible and coupé versions with prices starting at £60,000. Powered by a three-litre turbocharged V6 engine, it will shoot from 0-60mph in under five seconds.

And in another boost to Britain’s buoyant car industry, it will be built at Jag’s Castle Bromwich factory in Birmingham.
