A trackback is a url that let's people who visit your blog/site and who make a comment about it or link to it on their own blog/site show this to the public so that you know they're linking to you. It's rather like a ping from their site to yours.

In simple words trackback is one type of backlink method for website authors to request notification when somebody links to one of their documents.
