As the nominations were announced bright and early Thursday morning by Scandal's Kerry Washington and Emmy host Jimmy Kimmel, what's often more notable are the names excluded from the nomination lineup.

This year's announcement included several of the usual suspects, including Bryan Cranston, Julianna Margulies, Jon Hamm, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and the Modern Family cast. But rookies like Girls and New Girl squeezed in for notable nominations in key categories.

Most surprising was the dominance shown by Downton Abbey, which snagged six drama acting nominations, and American Horror Story, the latter of which tied for the most nominations with Mad Men with 17.

The Hollywood Reporter highlights some of the biggest snubs, from American Idol and Luck's exclusions to some of the actors who didn't receive the early-morning congratulatory call.
