Of cource you can have the degree, but now a days practical experience is counted everywhere.

Well I passed the hardware half of the certification failed the operating system section Ill retake it end of this year after I study up some network +.

You are on the right track. Any way all are weak in the OS section, so don't worry.

Once you have a sound knowledge of the hardware (experience & inquisitiveness), you can conquer the OS complexities easily.
