The best way in my experience is to download the add ons for firefox, they will enable you to look at the page scripts for sites and styles that you like.

You need to copy these into note book and then play around with them. Use cut and paste to see what does what.

By doing this you can very quickly build yourself a directory of effects and also learn why certain things do what they do.
