The film New is clearly targeted for the front benches and the male population at large. Filled with double meaning dialogues the film will not appeal to the women audience at large. Mercifully the film does not have much of flesh show. The success of the film lies in the excellent performance of Suryah in the pivotal role. His boyish charm and impish smile goes down well with the character. Simran is an effective foil and just blows you over with her performance.

Pappu an eight-year-old kid and son of Devyani feel neglected and hurt since he is always at the receiving end of his mother’s anger. Dejected he meets Manivannan a scientist and his assistant Karunas who gives a potion by which the eight-year-old kid is transformed into a 28-year-old youth (Suryah). Though he is physically a youth his mindset is of a kid. With this mindset and a physique of a youth Simran the daughter of Nassar owner of a toy manufacturing company woos him. In the meanwhile he realizes that his mother pines for him and he wants to go back to his mom. To get him out of the predicament the scientist gives him a potion to change him back to a kid. The potion works partially. During day he is a kid and by night he is a youth. Forced to marry Simran, Suryah alternates between two roles till he becomes the father of a baby boy. By then his dual life is exposed and how he copes up with his new found status forms the climax.

Suryah’s brilliant performance coupled with all round good portrayals by the supporting artistes makes the film a good entertainer. He has included the mother- son sentiment to woo the women audience and strike a balance with sexual innuendoes galore. Kiran as the madisaar maami oozes oomph. The songs are well shot and credit goes to K V Guhan for giving very good visuals. Rahman’s music is repetitive except for the song, which is a remix of the old MGR hit for which he deserves kudos.
