Aymanam village, Kottayam, Kerala
Ay in the Tamil language means 'five'and Vanam in Sanskrit means 'forests': Ayvanam, orAymanam, is the land of five forests (these are Vattakkadu, Thuruthikkadu, Vallyakadu, Moolakkadu, and Mekkadu)

The village borders Lake Vembanad on the west, near Kumarakom. Two-thirds of Aymanam consists of ricefields, two meters below sea level; the Meenachil provides water for the village. Low-lying areas flood from June to August.
By road, Aymanam is about 8 km on the Kottayam-Chunkam route. The nearest railway station is Kottayam Railway Station. Aymanam is 85 km from Cochin International Airport.
Birth place of St. Alphonsa:
Alphonsa dell’Immacolata Concezione; 19 August 1910 – 28 July 1946) is a Catholic Saint, the second person of Indian origin to be canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church and the first canonized saint of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, an Oriental-rite Catholic Church.
Sister Alphonsa began on 2 December 1953 in the Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Palai and she was declared a Servant of God. She was declared Venerable on 9 July 1985 by Pope John Paul II. Her beatification was declared 8 February 1986 by Pope John Paul II at Kottayam.

She spent her childhood in Aymanam in Kerala, and went to school at Corpus Christi. Writing her first novel, The God of Small Things, in 1992, completing it in 1996.[5] The book is semi-autobiographical and a major part captures her childhood experiences in Aymanam.
The book received the 1997 Booker Prize for Fiction and was listed as one of the New York Times Notable Books of the Year for 1997.[6] It reached fourth position on the New York Times Bestsellers list for Independent Fiction.
