Bhoothathankettu located 50 km north east of Ernakulam town, is a scenic dam site with boating facilities is situated in a vast virgin forest. It is a popular picnic sport with Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary near by.




You can spot various domestic and migratory birds in this Bird park. The park becomes populated with colorful razz especially in the months of winter as they fly down from northern countries. Morning is the best time to locate these birds. The area is filled with vibrancy and life with the chirping and flutter of the birds. Apart from the bird sanctuary the place is also famous for dam and other activities like trekking and nature walk.



At Bhoothathankettu eco tourism destination, the river Periyar joins the Edamalayar and Pooyamkuttiyar, forming Keralas longest and largest river. Down-stream there are several islands, falls, rapids, and deep chasms in the river bed. This multi-faceted nature of the river provides challenging opportunities for those who love adventure.In the olden days the bamboo from the forests was taken to Kalady through this river in rafts. Navigating the river posed a great challenge for those who transported the bamboo down the river. This old raft route can be rediscovered by an expedition on dinghies.The sunrise from the eco tourism destination of Bhoothathankettu is wonderful to watch.

The Idamalayar reservoir is about 12 km distance from the site. There is no railway access to the site; access to the site is through the greenish and thick forest. At the time of Malayatoor pilgrim season, travellers use the roads through the forest.

Large blocks of unshaped stones are placed on both sides of the Periyar River to form the dam, making it look like a natural dam built by superhumans. The name Bhoothathan Kettu, means “monster dam”; past generations believed it was built by a Bhootham (monster).

Summers are uncomfortably hot and humid. The best time therefore to visit Bhoothathankettu is between October and March.
