    Default Pathiramanal-The Island of Birds

Pathiramanal is a small 29 Hectare Island in the Vembanadu Lake. It is an abode for rare migratory birds from different parts of the world. The scenic beauty and tropic forest and wet land make it an ideal tourism destination.

It is situated on the border of Alleppy and Kottayam districts of Kerala. The Island lies between Thaneermukkom and Kumarakom on the inland waterway and is only accessible by boat. The scenery you see when you are on a boat is mind boggling. Ideally you should get a house boat.

The word Pathiramanal if translated literally means Sand of Midnight. Legend attributes the formation of Pathiramanal to Young Brahmin (Upper caste person) who jumped into the lake. Lake parted and the land which came up was named Pathiramanal.

The island is a Birdwatcher’s paradise. You can see Pintail Ducks, Common Teal,Night Herons, Cormorants Darters, Indian Shag, Purple herons, gulls, terns, large egrets, Intermediate Egret, Cattle Egret, Indian Pond Heron, Little Egret,Pheasant-tailed and Bronze-winged Jacanas, Stork-billed Kingfisher, elusive Water cock, lesser Whistling Duck, Cotton Pygmy-Goose, Little Cormorant, and Whiskered Tern. Some people have even reported seeing the Monark Flycatcher.
