If you expected something in tune with his offbeat oeuvre, you are in for a surprise. TV Chandran, the arthouse doyen, is now directing his first commercial venture, 'Sankaranum Mohananum'.

Sprinkled with comedy, the film may mark a massive deviation from the aesthetics of Danny and Ponthan Mada, but Chandran insists it’s no out-and-out potboiler either. “I don’t think films should carry strictly defined labels and consider all my films commercial ones. Reaching out to the audience has always been my priority, accolades come second,” he says.

As the title suggests, the film revolves around two brothers and their entwined lives, the gist lying in the fact that one is not alive. Chandran says though the film is essentially humorous, it doesn’t fall into the category of mindless entertainers. “The film explores the mindscape of the characters through striking sketches of an interior life. The film has layers of meaning buried deep inside the seemingly lighter plot,” he says. The crucial anomaly of the film, according to Chandran, is its experimentation with surrealism.

“It’s not slapstick frolic but the plentitude of surreal situations that generate humour in the film. The indulgence of a dead man in the being of his living brother makes the film interesting,” he says.

Jayasurya, who plays the title roles of both Sankaran and Mohanan, says it’s his first interface with meaningful humour. “A steady current of humour breezes uninterrupted in the film as in VKN or Basheer,” he says.

Since familiarity acts as a dampener when it comes to out-of-thebox stuff, the actor has gone for an absolute makeover to give life to the middle-aged Mohanan. “There is a string of nitty-gritties unique to this film, including my 10 different get-ups. More than being different, the film has bonafide genuineness,” he says.
