I seen alot of talk about this lately. Personally I don't see mac os x becoming a real competitor as an operating system for the x86. Apple specifically stated that it will only run on mac (they may now share the same proc but many if not all the other parts like the chipsets and such will be the same as always). Undoubtedly, people will find a way around any safeguards but then there becomes the very big issue of drivers for the mac for normal pc components. Ironically, however, apple stated that windows *should* work on a mac so windows and linux (which will most likely be ported as well) be a one sided competitor for os x. This isn't a big deal in my opinion either as people from what i seen buy mac because they are complete packages and for their style. Also, i highly doubt many people will be buying a mac just to replace the os on it as that seems counter-productive to me when they might as well buy a normal pc.
