After a gap of 5 years, Ranjith is going to hands with Mohanlal for the new movie 'Spirit'. Film is produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas.'Rock N Roll' is the last Mohanlal- Ranjith team’s film released in 2007. Shooting starts from March 10 , 2012.

The shoot of writer-director Ranjith's ‘Spirit' is on in and around the sprawling Choice house in Kochi. Mohanlal plays the lead in the film, along with Shankar Ramakrishnan and Kaniha.

The house has been transformed into a resort called ‘Casa Rosa' for the film. After some shots of Mohanlal near the building, the action shifts to a hall inside the house.

Although the title of the film is a subject of discussion in the media and on various social networking sites, Ranjith clarifies that the film is not just about alcohol and its effects, it is also about the triumph of the human spirit.

Mohanlal's role

'Reghunandan (Mohanlal) is a laidback person. He was working in a bank when he leaves his job to pursue a career in journalism. He is divorced. His best friends are his former wife Meera (Kaniha) and her husband, Alexy (Shankar Ramakrishnan). An eye-opening incident changes his carefree life, to an extent. He is currently writing a book, a biography titled ‘Spirit.'

“The movie also takes a look at the marital lives of a cross-section of people in society,” says Ranjith, who recently won the national award for the best feature film in Malayalam for his ‘Indian Rupee.'

Although Prakash Raj was originally scheduled to play Alexy, due to various reasons, the role went to Shankar, the scenarist of ‘Urumi' and director of ‘Island Express' one of the 10 films in ‘Kerala Café.'

Says Shankar: “I have never considered acting. Although Ranjith's ‘Leela' was supposed to be my entry into Mollywood, ‘Spirit,' is now my debut film. Alexy, my character in ‘Spirit,' may not look friendly, but he is a nice person. He was a teacher. He quit his job and is now into organic farming and running ‘Casa Rosa.' He is the foster father to Reghunandan's child.”

Kaniha's role in this film is different from the usual soft-spoken characters she plays. “Here I am bold and make my own decisions in life. Meera is educated, intelligent and is fond of music.”

‘Spirit' is being produced under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas. Venu is the cinematographer. Lyrics by Rafeeq Ahmed have been set to tune by Shahabaz Aman.

“പ്രകാശ് രാജിന്*റെ സമീപനം തീര്*ത്തും അണ്*പ്രൊഫഷണലാണ്. ആദ്യം സിനിമയില്* അഭിനയിക്കാമെന്ന് താല്*പ്പര്യം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് വാക്കുമാറി. പ്രതിഫലത്തെച്ചൊല്ലിയായിരിക്കാം അദ്ദേഹം പിന്**മാറിയത്. ഒരു തരത്തില്* പറഞ്ഞാല്* ഷൂട്ടിംഗ് ആരംഭിക്കുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് ഇങ്ങനെ സംഭവിച്ചത് നന്നായി. ഇത്രയും നിരുത്തരവാദപരമായും അണ്*പ്രഫഷണലായും പെരുമാറുന്ന ഒരാള്*ക്കൊപ്പം ജോലി ചെയ്യുകയെന്നത് ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുള്ള കാര്യമാണ്” - രഞ്ജിത് ഒരു വെബ് പോര്*ട്ടലിന് അനുവദിച്ച അഭിമുഖത്തില്* പറഞ്ഞു.

“പ്രോഡക്ഷന്* കണ്*ട്രോളര്* സമീപിച്ച സമയത്ത് പ്രതിഫലത്തിന്*റെ കാര്യം പ്രകാശ് രാജിന് ചര്*ച്ച ചെയ്യാമായിരുന്നു. അതിന് പകരം പിന്നീട് വിളിക്കാമെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു. എന്നാല്* അതുണ്ടായില്ല.” - രഞ്ജിത്ത് പറയുന്നു.

ഫോണ്* കോളുകള്*ക്കോ എസ് എം എസ് സന്ദേശങ്ങള്*ക്കോ പ്രകാശ് രാജ് പ്രതികരിച്ചില്ല. ഇതാണ് രഞ്ജിത്തിനെ ചൊടിപ്പിച്ചത്. പ്രകാശ് രാജിന് പകരം തന്*റെ ശിഷ്യന്* ശങ്കര്* രാമകൃഷ്ണന് ആ കഥാപാത്രത്തെ നല്*കി. ഇപ്പോള്* ‘സ്പിരിറ്റ്’ ചിത്രീകരണം പുരോഗമിക്കുന്നു.
