UGC NET

The University Grants Commission (UGC) will conduct the National Eligibility Test (NET) on June 24 to determine the eligibility for the award of junior research fellowship (JRF) and lectureship in humanities and social science subjects, including languages.

The objective-type test has three papers.

The 75-minute Paper I will start at 9.30 a.m. with questions to assess the teaching and research aptitude and test the reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness.

The candidates will have to answer at least 50 of the 60 multiple-choice questions of two marks each.

Paper II, also of 75 minutes, will start at 10.45 a.m. with 50 objective-type compulsory questions based on the subject selected by the candidate. Each question carries two marks.

The 150-minute Paper III will start at 1.30 p.m. with 75 objective-type compulsory questions from the subject selected. Each question carries two marks.

The general candidates should score 40 per cent marks each in Papers I and II and 50 per cent in Paper III to be considered for the final preparation of the result.

Eligibility

Those who have secured at least 55 per cent marks in the Master's degree in the subject concerned are eligible to apply (50 per cent for those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and the physically and the visually challenged). Those who have appeared, or will be appearing in, the final year of the qualifying examination may also apply. Age should be not more than 28 as on June 1 for the junior research fellowship, relaxed by five years for the reserved categories and women. The age will be relaxed for those with research experience or an LL.M. degree. There is no upper age limit for applying for lectureship.

How to apply

Apply online on www.ugcnetonline.in or :::Welcome to UGC ::: before April 30. For doing so, a copy of the bank challan used to pay the examination fee and a passport-size photograph scanned in the JPEG format at less than 300 kb are required.

Take two printouts of the online application submitted and a copy each of the attendance slip and the admission card and send them, along with the documents required, to the Registrar of the university chosen as the test centre so as to reach the addressee on or before May 7. Those in the reserved categories should enclose an attested copy of the certificate proving their eligibility for quota.

The envelope containing the application form should be superscribed “UGC National Eligibility Test for Junior Research Fellowship and Eligibility for Lectureship June 2012.” A gazetted officer or the head of the university department or the Principal of the college should attest the application.

The examination fee for general candidates is Rs. 450, for those out of the creamy layer of the Other Backward Classes, Rs. 225, and those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and the physically and the visually challenged, Rs. 110.

The candidates should fill the bank challan in triplicate and the three copies should be submitted in the any branch of the State Bank of India to pay the fee, along with the bank charge of Rs. 20.

The bank will return two copies of the challan and the candidates have to attach the UGC copy of the challan with the printout of their online applications.

The 74 UGC test centres include the University of Calicut; the Cochin University of Science and Technology, the University of Kerala; Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai; Bharathiar University, Coimbatore; Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli; the University of Madras; Mangalore University; Bangalore University, Bangalore; and the University of Mysore.

The test centres will issue the admission card.

NATA registration

Register names for the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) at any of the test centres and appear for the test at the time allotted. A NATA score is mandatory for admission to the Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) course.

Those with 50 per cent marks in Plus Two with mathematics as one of the subjects will be eligible for admission. NATA can be taken on any working day till August 31. The test fee is Rs. 1,000.

NATA consists of a paper-based drawing test and a computer-based online aesthetic sensitivity test.
